Srilanka, May 8 -- If the Opposition combined with other parties in the opposition and contested the election as I advised, a considerable number of Local Government bodies might have been secured, said former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Commenting on the outcomes of the Local Government Election, the former President said that the opposition together with other parties could have contested the election at least for the Colombo Municipal Council.

"We contested an election under symbol of elephant after a lapse of five years and this is a start of a new journey. The UNP has performed well in some areas," he said.
