Sri Lanka, March 18 -- One person was killed and 37 others were injured on Saturday when a bus carrying a group of pilgrims from Pudaluoya, Kandy to Nelligala International Buddhist Centre met with an accident while going up the steep slope leading to the Buddhist Centre.

The deceased is Pahalgedara Sugathapala (79), a resident of Pundaluoya Halpola area, Police said.

Investigations have revealed that the accident occurred after the brakes of the bus failed while going up the steep slope. The bus which slid down after its brakes failed had rammed into a tree while coming down and had stopped.
