Sri Lanka, Dec. 15 -- An oil spill near Colombo Port on 14 December 2025 was swiftly brought under control, preventing a potential environmental hazard. Authorities reported that around 200 litres of crude oil leaked into the sea due to a technical fault during unloading operations. Fuel transfers at the affected mooring have been temporarily suspended while repairs and investigations continue.
The leak occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. near the Single Point Buoy Mooring used by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), while the Panama-flagged tanker MT ASP Avana was unloading crude oil for the CPC refinery. Officials traced the spill to a defect in the underwater pipeline system.
