Sri Lanka, Oct. 3 -- Nuwan Indika Gamage won Sri Lanka its first medal, a bronze, in the Men's Long Jump T44 at the 13th World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi, achieving a leap of 6.46 metres, held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, India, yesterday.

Nuwan set his seasonal best against a strong field of world-class athletes, including Olympic and World Championship medalists. Coached by Y.K. Kularatna, he described it as a superb accomplishment for the country.

The gold medal was won by Italy's Marco Cicchetti with a jump of 6.98m, while Dzmitry Bartashevich, competing under the Neutral Para Athletes (NPA) flag, took silver with 6.90m.
