Sri Lanka, Nov. 20 -- The National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) states there is no need to amend the Right to Information (RTI) Act No. 12 of 2016, in the wake of media reports that the Government is considering changes.
Instead, the organisation states the priority should be to address the difficulties already faced by the RTI Commission.
According to reports, the Commission is struggling with limited resources, and several positions remain unfilled. It is also worrying that some Government institutions appear to undermine the Commission by failing to provide information the public is entitled to.
The Government should recognise the role the RTI framework has played in supporting anti-corruption efforts.
