Sri Lanka, Aug. 27 -- Three prisoners had committed suicide last week due to the inability to inhale narcotics, Prisons Commissioner General Thushara Upuldeniya said yesterday (26).

He said three male prisoners, one from the Negombo prison, another from the Colombo Remand Prison and another from the Boosa Prison has committed suicide due to the scarcity of narcotics now with the crackdown in prisons.

"These prisoners who were drug addicts has had no access to drugs since authorities were vigilant on narcotics smugglers in the prisons".

When asked if deceased were engaged in any rehabilitation programmes, he added, "There are various rehabilitation programmes for prisoners, but these prisoners are not convicted but they were undergoing ...
