Sri Lanka, Oct. 8 -- During the parliamentary session today (8), Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Ratnayake addressed questions regarding the delay in issuing new vehicle number plates.

The Minister revealed that as of September 30 a total of 165,512 vehicle number plates had not yet been issued. He attributed the delay to the implementation of seven special security features in the new plates.

"The process has taken longer than expected. We entrusted the University of Moratuwa with testing all seven security features. They were able to test six locally, and the seventh had to be tested internationally, which caused the delay. These efforts are aimed at enhancing security," Minister Ratnayake explained.
