India, June 17 -- The Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) has launched a large-scale coastal cleanup operation to mitigate the impact of marine pollution caused by the capsized cargo vessel MSC ELSA 3, which sank on May 25 about 38 nautical miles off the Kerala coast.
According to MEPA General Manager Jagath Gunasekara, the ship - sailing under a Liberian flag - was carrying 643 containers, including 13 with hazardous chemicals, 66 with plastic beads, and approximately 452 metric tons of fuel.
