Sri Lanka, March 11 -- The Matara Magistrate's Court has issued an open warrant for the arrest of former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon in connection with a 2023 shooting incident near a hotel in Weligama, Matara. The Matara Chief Magistrate, Aruna Buddhadasa, made the ruling following a request by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The incident resulted in the death of a CID officer and the injury of another. On February 27, the Magistrate's Court had already issued arrest orders for eight police officers, including Tennakoon.
Despite efforts by the CID to locate Tennakoon, including searches of 10 locations and the deployment of intelligence officers to 18 other sites, he remains at large.
