Sri Lanka, Jan. 28 -- At the annual mango festival organized by the Puthur Kalamati Aladi Murugan Kovil in Jaffna, a mango offered as a sacrificial gift to the gods was sold for an astonishing Rs. 246,000 yesterday (27).
This unique tradition, celebrated at northern temples, involves auctioning the mango offered during the festival. Devotees believe that taking home the sacred fruit and hanging it in their homes wrapped in a white cloth brings prosperity and good fortune.
The mango's high value at the auction reflects the deep reverence and unwavering faith of Hindu devotees. This year, the prized fruit was purchased by a wealthy family visiting from Germany, who traveled to Jaffna specifically for the festival.
