Srilanka, May 22 -- An officer affiliated with the Mahaweli Authority has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption. The arrest was made over allegations that the officer demanded a bribe of Rs. 20,000 from a resident in the Welikanda area.
According to reports, the bribe was solicited in exchange for facilitating arrangements related to a land plot and obtaining a permit. The resident had requested an alternative land allocation, after the originally provided 20-perch plot in Athugala-granted under the Ranaviru Foundation housing scheme-was found to be swampy and unsuitable for construction.
