Sri Lanka, Jan. 27 -- Agriculture and Livestock Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne has announced that funds have been allocated this year for the construction of nearly 1,000 kilometers of elephant fences to enhance wildlife management and reduce human-elephant conflicts.
The proposed fencing will cover areas including the Kahalla Reserve and an elephant access route connecting Tabbo, with plans to separate the Tabbowa and Kahalla reserves with two fences along the Mee oya region. According to the Deputy Minister, this initiative is aimed at protecting both wildlife and local communities while facilitating safer movement for elephants in their natural habitats.
