Sri Lanka, Nov. 4 -- Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) Parliamentarian S. Sritharan said on Sunday (November 2) that distributing personal firearms for self-defence is not a suitable approach to address security concerns faced by public representatives.

Commenting on reports that over 20 MPs and several Buddhist clergy had requested personal revolvers, the Parliamentarian noted that Sri Lanka's past already carried tragic examples of Parliamentarians shooting each other, resulting in one fatality and the other being jailed.

"It is not advisable to hand out deadly firearms to individuals. If you give someone a gun, you also have to provide training and practice. That alone creates unnecessary risk," he said.
