Srilanka, May 5 -- Special security measures for the local government elections commenced this morning (May 5), according to Police Media Spokesperson SSP Buddhika Manatunga.

A total of 3,216 mobile patrols have been deployed islandwide, supported by the deployment of 65,000 police officers to ensure election-related safety and order.

The police have also indicated that military assistance will be sought if necessary to further strengthen security operations during the election period.
