Sri Lanka, July 31 -- A fundamental rights petition was yesterday filed before the Supreme Court challenging the government's recent decisions regarding the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity (SL-UDI) project, alleging grave violations of the Constitution, data sovereignty, national security, and public finance laws.
Civil society activist Lina Amani Rishard Hamid filed this petition naming 27 respondents including Cabinet of Ministers as respondents. The petitioner alleges that the government has secretly amended a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of India, effectively outsourcing Sri Lanka's digital identity infrastructure and biometric data control to Indian authorities and contractors.
