Sri Lanka, Sept. 18 -- The Anuradhapura High Court today (18) delivered a landmark ruling in a case filed in 2024 under the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, No. 28 of 1996. The case concerned the failure to construct the Mahawa-Vavuniya railway tracks in accordance with the Access Regulations for Persons with Disabilities No. 01 of 2006.
High Court Judge Nalinda Hewawasam stressed that Sri Lanka, as a State party to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and under obligations of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 1978, is legally bound to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities.
