Srilanka, Feb. 24 -- At a special press conference held at the Government Information Department, Ravi Seneviratne, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, announced that the government is actively exploring the reinstatement of the death penalty to combat a surge in serious crimes, including underworld murders and drug trafficking.

Seneviratne emphasized that discussions on reintroducing capital punishment are already underway-a notable shift since it was last imposed in 1976.

Additionally, the Prisons Department reports that over 1,200 inmates, currently serving death sentences, remain in custody, further fueling the national debate on the issue.
