Sri Lanka, Aug. 30 -- Former Minister DEW Gunasekara has resigned from his post as the General Secretary of the Communist Party.

The decision had been made when the party Working Committee had met today.

Speaking to the Daily News, Gunasekara said that he had requested to be relieved from his position and subsequently the Working Committee had taken a unanimous decision to appoint Consultant Dr. G. Weerasinghe as the party's General Secretary.

Gunasekara said that he had tendered his resignation after the Working Committee had analysed the recently concluded general election. He said that Dr. Weerasinghe however, had been on the party's national list.
