Sri Lanka, Oct. 31 -- In a significant step toward environmental protection, a new regulation banning the free distribution of shopping bags will be implemented across Sri Lanka starting tomorrow (Nov. 1).

According to a gazette notification issued on October 1, consumers will now have to pay a fixed price for shopping bags if needed, as shops and supermarkets will no longer provide them for free.

Acting Director of the Consumer Affairs Authority, Ms. Samanthi Karunaratne, clarified that the law specifically targets shopping bags with handles.

The initiative aims to reduce plastic usage and promote the adoption of reusable bags among consumers.
