Sri Lanka, Nov. 17 -- Former Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) Chairman Anura Walpola was granted bail today (17) by the Colombo Magistrate's Court following his arrest by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued the order after hearing submissions from CIABOC officers and the defence. Walpola was released on two surety bonds of Rs. 1 million and was barred from travelling overseas. The court also cautioned him against attempting to influence witnesses.

Walpola was taken into custody over allegations that he approved an irregular appointment to a senior position at the bureau during his tenure.
