Srilanka, Feb. 26 -- Impunity was enjoyed to a certain extent by the organised crime gangs in Sri Lanka. But it is nothing like the impunity that was enjoyed by criminal gangs in El Salvador, Philippines etc.

However, for a small country Sri Lanka has an underworld that terrorises certain communities with egregious impunity. These gangs once upon a time obtained an impetus from the international crime syndicate that was the LTTE.

But it has been a long time since the LTTE ceased its international gun-running operations. Now, underworld gangs prowl with or without international network connections.

They did enjoy immunity of sorts. How did persons such as the recently deceased Ganemulla Sanjeewa operate without being totally neutralised...
