Srilanka, Feb. 20 -- A herd of elephants collided with the Meenagaya Express train traveling from Batticaloa to Colombo in the Galoya area this morning (20), causing the train to derail and disrupting services on the Batticaloa route.
According to the Railway Department, the accident occurred when the train struck the herd, resulting in the derailment. Tragically, five wild elephants were killed in the incident.
Following the collision, train traffic on the Batticaloa route has been temporarily restricted.
As a precautionary measure, the Railway Department has canceled the Pulathisi train scheduled to operate from Batticaloa to Colombo.
Efforts to clear the derailed train and restore normal operations are currently underway.
