Srilanka, May 5 -- Police report that eight local government election candidates have been arrested in the past 24 hours, along with five party supporters, in connection with election-related violations. The arrests occurred between 6:00 a.m. on May 4 and 6:00 a.m. on May 5.
Authorities also confirmed that the total number of candidates arrested since March 3 has risen to 54, with 204 party supporters detained during the same period.
In addition, police have taken 46 vehicles into custody for breaching election laws, as part of ongoing efforts to enforce compliance and maintain order during the election period.
