Sri Lanka, Nov. 21 -- The government will introduce a Demerit Points system for driving licences from the middle of next year, Minister Bimal Rathnayake said, aiming to promote disciplined and safer driving on Sri Lankan roads.

The new system will identify repeat traffic offenders and link with online payment of fines through GovPay. By December 31, Sri Lanka will be able to pay traffic fines online, making the process easier and more efficient.

Minister Rathnayake emphasized that the system is not meant to increase government revenue. "We do not want to increase the government's money by fining drivers, but this system is necessary to ensure driver discipline," he said.
