India, Dec. 1 -- The recent disaster situation has claimed 50 lives in the Badulla District while 40 others remain missing as of 9 a.m. on Saturday (29), Badulla District Secretary, Prabhath Abeywardena said.

The highest number of deaths and missing persons has been reported from the Kandaketiya Divisional Secretariat area, with seven confirmed deaths and 20 missing. A total of 24,300 people belonging to 6,102 families across 15 Divisional Secretariat divisions have been affected. Of them, 17,262 persons from 4,170 families are housed in 125 safe centres established across the district, while another 6,840 persons from 1,875 families are staying with relatives.
