SRILANKA, Dec. 4 -- The city of Belem is in northern Brazil, on the Para River, which is part of the Amazon River delta system. It is considered the gateway to the Amazon and serves as an important port and economic hub for the region.
Although the summit carries great symbolic weight in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, it has not drawn the same level of attendance from world leaders as in past years.
Unlike many Earth Summits or climate discussions that I have been involved with organising or attending in the past - two of them held in Rio, Brazil - many governments are sending smaller delegations, raising concerns about political will even as the climate emergency deepens.
