Sri Lanka, July 19 -- The Court of Appeal has overturned the death sentence handed down to an 80-year-old woman by the Hambantota High Court in connection with a murder case dating back to 1993.

The Attorney General had filed the case in the Hambantota High Court, which convicted the woman and imposed the death penalty in 2023. However, the woman later filed an appeal challenging the verdict.

After reviewing the case, the Court of Appeal ruled that the conviction could not be upheld due to inconsistencies and contradictions in the evidence presented during the trial. The court concluded that the death sentence could not be confirmed under such circumstances.
