Srilanka, March 12 -- A Customs officer and two accomplices were arrested by the Police Narcotics Bureau on November 3 for illegally importing a consignment of foreign-made cigarettes worth Rs. 900,000 through Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
The trio, all residents of Gampola, were apprehended while attempting to smuggle 300 cartons hidden in five suitcases. The cigarettes had arrived on Fly Dubai flight FZ-569 from Dubai.
The arrest took place as the Customs officer, presenting his official ID, was attempting to take the goods out of the airport.
The three suspects are scheduled to appear before the Negombo Magistrate's Court on December 3, facing charges of illegal importation, smuggling, and possession.
