Srilanka, March 19 -- Sri Lanka Customs officers recently intercepted a significant shipment of illegally imported cigarettes valued at over Rs. 124 million. The confiscated contraband included 3,565 cartons containing a total of 713,000 sticks of cigarettes smuggled into the country disguised as a legitimate consignment.
The cigarettes were found concealed within five pallets of hollowed-out 5mm polypropylene corrugated sheets, which were imported from the United Arab Emirates by a company based in Padukka. The seizure prevented a loss of Rs. 107,985,621 in state revenue, according to Sri Lanka Customs.
Customs authorities are currently conducting further investigations into the incident.
