Srilanka, Feb. 17 -- A committee comprising 12 experts has been appointed to present recommendations for the cleaning and development of Beira Lake in Colombo city.

Although several projects have been implemented in the past to clean Beira Lake, they have been largely unsuccessful. In response, Urban Development, Housing, and Construction Minister Anura Karunatilaka has established this expert committee to provide well-informed recommendations.

The Ministry is also focusing on halting the discharge of wastewater from 21 drainage canals into Beira Lake this year. This has significantly contributed to the growth of algae, unpleasant odours, and discoloration of the water.
