Sri Lanka, Sept. 27 -- Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar announced that 36 new firefighters have joined the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) this week, marking a significant step in strengthening the city's emergency response.
She noted that fire safety has become a pressing concern following the recent incident at 1st Cross Street, highlighting the challenges of protecting residents in a rapidly and haphazardly developed city.
The Mayor also emphasized the urgent need for five additional fire substations, with locations for three already identified. Plans are also underway to expand the fire services team further, including the recruitment of women firefighters.
