Sri Lanka, Feb. 4 -- As declared, 77 years have gone by since gaining political freedom in Sri Lanka. Therefore, this is the right moment to reflect on the cultural and ideological shifts that have shaped the nation. One such shift is evident in the evolution of the national anthem. I once asked a well-known scholar why the anthem, which originally began with "Namo Namo Matha," was later changed to "Sri Lanka Matha." His response was a knowing smile, followed by an explanation:
"The ancient scholars believed that the 'na' or 'n' is not auspicious. As such, the letter had to be changed to 'Sri,' which gives fortune and prosperity. So they changed the first line to 'Sri Lanka Matha.'
