Sri Lanka, Nov. 25 -- The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to terminate the process of issuing licenses for the operation of terrestrial analogue television channels in Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Mass Media announced.

Currently, 24 television channels, including five state-owned channels, operate in the country using licenses issued to 16 institutions under the existing terrestrial analogue system. With the frequency spectrum operating at maximum capacity, the Ministry initiated the Digital Non-territorial Television Broadcasting Project in 2025 to implement a single digital terrestrial broadcasting system.
