Srilanka, April 1 -- The Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association, Gemunu Wijeratne, has announced that bus fares will see a significant increase in July despite potential fuel price reductions during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Speaking to the media today (01), Wijeratne stated that buses are already operating at a loss of Rs. 3 per kilometer and that fare adjustments are inevitable.

He emphasized that the annual bus fare revision, scheduled for April, June, and July, will result in a fare hike, regardless of any diesel price reductions.

According to Wijeratne, rising operational costs, including the reintroduction of VAT on buses and increased vehicle prices, are key factors driving the fare increase.
