Srilanka, Nov. 5 -- Reconstruction work on the historic Kurunegala Raja Sabha Mandapaya (Royal Assembly Hall), which was illegally demolished by the former Kurunegala Mayor, has barely begun. However, archaeologists have already made a significant discovery: pillar base (Pekada) carved from black granite, in addition to those made of wood.

Pekada are a form of sculptural technology used to support and elevate structures from the base. Wooden Pekada are commonly found in places like the Embekke Devalaya. The discovery of a black granite Pekada at the Raja Sabha Mandapaya site is considered highly valuable.
