Bati Penaia, Kandy SC's Clifford Cup hero passes away
Sri Lanka, Oct. 17 -- Former Fijian, Sri Lanka Sevens, and Kandy Sports Club centre Bati Penaia, who thrilled rugby fans with his powerful runs, passed away at 60 in Fiji yesterday. Penaia, alongside fellow Fijian Kitioni Ratudardar, became a fan favourite during his time with Kandy SC from 1992 to 1994.
Penaia's standout performances helped Kandy SC achieve major milestones, starting with their historic win of the Clifford Cup Knockout Tournament in 1992. In a memorable final, Kandy SC defeated Police SC 22-09, securing the prestigious title for the first time. The following year, Kandy SC edged out CH and FC 18-16 to claim the Clifford Cup once again.
