Srilanka, Jan. 31 -- The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber advisory for severe lightning today (31), valid until 11.00 p.m.

Thundershowers accompanied by intense lightning and short periods of strong, gusty winds are expected in several areas. The warning mainly covers the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara districts.Authorities have urged the public to take safety precautions during thunderstorms to minimise the risk of lightning-related accidents.

Residents are advised to:

Stay indoors and seek shelter in a safe building

Avoid standing under trees or near tall isolated structures
