Sri Lanka, March 3 -- In a groundbreaking initiative, artificial intelligence (AI) technology is being introduced to prevent train collisions with wild elephants and other wildlife. With the support of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Peradeniya, AI-powered devices will be installed on trains as part of a pilot project set to launch in early March. These devices will alert train drivers if elephants are detected within 500 meters of the railway track, enhancing safety for both wildlife and passengers.
The AI system will undergo technical trials, followed by a three-month study before being expanded to railway lines that intersect with wildlife corridors.
