Sri Lanka, Sept. 11 -- The Asian Development Bank will introduce the concept of commercial agriculture development in Sri Lanka because the farmers will not be able to escape from poverty if they keep on just growing rice, said Takafumi Kadono Country Director for Sri Lanka,
By providing water for irrigation maybe they can harvest twice a year instead of just once a year. But still their income level is not going to be elevated sufficiently. He said with the International Fund for Agriculture Development organisation they intend to introduce commercial agriculture development so that the farmers can start growing high value cash crops.
" And next year, we're talking about agriculture value chain development as well," he said.
