Sri Lanka, Oct. 16 -- The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has urged the public to view the abolishment of corporal punishment as part of a collective effort to promote positive and respectful discipline that builds children's dignity and confidence, rather than relying on fear or violence.

In a statement issued yesterday (15), the HRCSL expressed serious concern over the growing number of child rights violations reported across the country, particularly those involving corporal punishment. The Commission noted that such practices not only cause physical injury but also lead to long-term emotional harm, severe trauma, and, in some cases, suicide.
