Sri Lanka, Oct. 1 -- In line with today's (1st) World Children's Day, the Department of Probation and Childcare Services has initiated a month-long project to provide birth certificates to children who do not have them.
This project is being implemented with the support of the Registrar General's Department, and Commissioner of the Department of Probation and Childcare Services, Gayani Kaushalya Wijesinghe, stated that birth certificates can be obtained throughout the month of October without any payment.
Sri Lanka became a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991. Article 7 of this convention recognises the right of every child to a nationality and a name from birth.
