Sri Lanka, Nov. 1 -- One hundred and thirty-four traders have been arrested for selling rice without displaying price tags and 51 traders for selling rice at higher prices, Galle District Office of the Consumer Affairs Authority stated.
Officers of the Authority said that 40 traders who sold rice at an inflated price have been sued in court and a fine of over Rs. four million (Rs. 4,900,000) has been collected. The fines collected so far from 126 traders in court cases regarding failure to display rice price tags are Rs. 894, 000.
These traders had been arrested during raids carried out by officers in the areas of Galle, Hirambura, Ambalangoda, Wanduramba, Iduruwa, Uragaha and Elpitiya.
