Islamabad, Sept. 23 -- IN PAKISTAN AND in many other Muslim majority countries around the world, we see problems arising due to certain cultural practices, which have no basis in Islam.

Generation after generation, these practices have been encouraged and not condemned.

It baffles me that, in a country where over 97% of the population is Muslim, we have allowed these harmful traditions to flourish.

It is estimated that around 1000 honour killings occur each year in Pakistan, alone. In 2019, the Edhi Foundation found 375 newborn bodies in various parts of Karachi, the majority of them baby girls. This is occurring in many cities, and the actual statistics are thought to be much higher than documented.
