Nairobi, Dec. 10 -- Hotels in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve are operating at between 0 and 15 per cent bed occupancy for local tourists as the Covid-19 pandemic crushes tourism.

The number of international tourists has plummeted to almost zero as the effects the pandemic continue. This is in contrast to last year, when the hotels operated at above 80 per cent occupancy for local, and more than 30 per cent for international tourists.

Industry players are bracing for tough times and some of them are describing this as one of the worst festive seasons since 1958, when the Mara was declared a tourist destination.

"I have never seen something like this in the last 60 years. It's a total mess," said a hotelier.
