Sri Lanka, Jan. 20 -- The United National Party today called all progressive forces to join in its efforts in defeating the Government's effort to abolish the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said in a statement that it was the duty of people-friendly forces to sustain the freedom that was won in 2015.
"The Government is planning to bury the freedom won by the people in this country painstakingly and to bring about dictatorship and nepotism by scrapping the 19th Amendment," the statement said.
The statement said that the previous Government was able to ensure freedom and democracy through enacting the 19th Amendment.
