Mumbai, April 10 -- Tata Power has received regulatory approval to deploy a 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Mumbai, a significant move to strengthen the city's power reliability and accelerate the transition to clean energy. The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has sanctioned the project, recognising its role in addressing power demand surges and grid balancing.
The BESS will support Mumbai's electricity grid by storing excess renewable energy during off-peak hours and releasing it when demand peaks. This flexibility will help reduce blackouts, improve grid resilience, and ensure efficient energy utilisation, particularly during high-consumption periods like summers or major events.
This initiative marks one of India's most substantial urban battery storage deployments to date and reflects Tata Power's commitment to sustainable infrastructure and innovation. It also aligns with India's broader goal of integrating renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into the mainstream energy mix.
