Mumbai, June 11 -- The Gujarat government has granted in-principle approval for urban development projects worth over Rs 17 billion in a single day. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel cleared the funding under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Urban Development Scheme, aimed at modernising infrastructure and raising urban living standards across the state.
The sanctioned amount will support six newly-formed Municipal Corporations, five Municipalities, and existing Corporations in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will receive Rs 5.46 billion, while Gandhinagar is set to get Rs 320 million.
Among the new Municipal Corporations, Morbi is allocated Rs 2.7 billion, Surendranagar Rs 2.58 billion, Vapi Rs 2.52 billion, Anand Rs 1.48 billion, Navsari Rs 903.5 million, and Nadiad Rs 719.1 million. Smaller municipalities will also benefit, with Vadnagar receiving Rs 163.7 million, Himmatnagar Rs 733 million, Siddhpur Rs 374 million, Halvad Rs 402 million, and Bharuch Rs 8.55 million.
Of the total approvals, Rs 6.76 billion is dedicated to 247 infrastructure projects such as street lighting, solar systems, parks, drainage networks, stormwater systems, civic centres, and fire safety upgrades within the newly-established Municipal Corporations.
Roadworks under the Chief Minister's Urban Roads Scheme account for Rs 6.53 billion, covering resurfacing, white topping, and upgrades to major roads in Anand, Surendranagar, Vapi, Morbi, Ahmedabad, and Gandhinagar.
Another Rs 1.92 billion has been sanctioned for essential urban services, including water supply, filter plant repairs, sewerage, and stormwater drainage systems in Surendranagar, Vapi, and Anand. Additionally, Rs 310 million will fund iconic road projects in Anand and Surendranagar.
Under the Private Society Janbhagidari Scheme, Rs 8.55 million has been allocated for paving common plots in Bharuch. To improve water access, Rs 673.5 million will be used for drinking water upgrades in Himmatnagar, Siddhpur, and Morbi.
Outgrowth areas in Morbi, Vapi, and Halvad will also see Rs 640.2 million in investments for water pipelines, underground sewers, road works, and new fire stations.
