Mumbai, April 21 -- Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, visited the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) headquarters in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, to review its functioning and reinforce India's commitment to miner welfare and occupational safety.
The visit was aimed at assessing the DGMS's ongoing initiatives and strengthening the country's mine safety framework, ensuring robust practices are in place for protecting miners across India.
Accompanied by Ms Deepika Kachhal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Employment, and other senior ministry officials, the Union Minister chaired a comprehensive review meeting at the DGMS headquarters. The meeting was attended by top DGMS officers and presided over by Shri Ujjwal Tah, Director General of DGMS, who extended a formal welcome and presented an overview of the organisation's structure, objectives, training efforts, and operational strategies.
Focus on Good Governance and Technological Upgradation Dr Mandaviya emphasised the need for good governance and enhanced coordination with state governments to improve occupational safety and health services in the mining sector. He underscored the importance of aligning DGMS officers with global best practices and cutting-edge mining technologies, to uplift both the department and the industry at large.
A mock rescue operation was also organised, showcasing the preparedness and commitment of DGMS in handling emergency situations. The demonstration drew particular attention from the Minister, who lauded the efforts made to ensure miner safety through timely response mechanisms.
Green Initiative and Future Outlook Following the review and demonstration, Dr Mandaviya participated in a plantation drive at the DGMS premises, reinforcing the Government's parallel focus on environmental stewardship.
This visit underlines the Centre's proactive approach in upgrading mining safety protocols, promoting a culture of prevention, and ensuring a safe and secure working environment for all those employed in the mining sector.
