Colombo, Sept. 28 -- Wildlife officials have reported that a disease is spreading among monkeys in the Polonnaruwa and Giritale areas, raising concerns about the possible risk of transmission to humans.
They said the large number of monkeys and baboons roaming around the sacred city could increase the likelihood of the disease spreading. However, despite the risk, there is little public awareness about the situation.
The overpopulation of monkeys in Polonnaruwa and Giritale has been a long-standing issue, which remains unresolved.
Officials said infected monkeys are being anesthetized and samples are being collected for testing.
