Mumbai, June 11 -- The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has approved funding of Rs 543.6 million for seven infrastructure and welfare projects under the Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam (VCVT), aimed at improving law enforcement and public safety in North Chennai.
Of the total, Rs 91.6 million has been allocated for installing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at 45 key traffic points to boost surveillance capabilities. An additional Rs 9 million will fund the procurement of 60 new police patrol two-wheelers, while Rs 6 million has been earmarked for skill development programmes in 10 boys' and girls' clubs.
A rehabilitation centre for drug addicts will be set up at a cost of Rs 29.5 million to aid in substance abuse recovery and community support.
The plan also includes substantial infrastructure development: Rs 97.5 million will go towards new police barracks, and Rs 310 million has been set aside for constructing two major police stations-V.6 Kolathur and K-5 Peravallur.
Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun confirmed the funding, stating that the investment forms part of CMDA's larger VCVT initiative. The plan encompasses collaborative infrastructure upgrades across ten government departments, led by the Housing and Urban Development department, following a directive by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
